Invisible Disabilities Week – My Story

I just learned today that it is Invisible Disabilities Week. As someone who has spent her whole adult life with an invisible disability, I thought I would share this ‘short’  anecdote on what it is like to look strong and healthy but struggle with a pain and disability that is not obvious to the casual observer. I know I promised short, but this wasn’t planned and you know me, this could go on a bit, for which I apologise in advance – but there are some nice photos too (and yes, that is a packet of crisps in front of me!)

If life were a game, ‘abilities’ would be the tokens we collect to advance ourselves. Abilities are the bronze coins, they are the pennies. We all have them stored away, but they are nothing like the gold coins we prize; they are commonplace.

Disabilities Are The Real Prizes.

They are rare, unique, and irreplicable. You may ask, how is a disability a good thing?Disabilities make me different. Exactly. That’s exactly it. Disabilities make you different. They let you stand out, they let you be seen. Don’t confuse this with exclusion or segregation.

Sure, people may be nervous to approach you because you are different, but that’s their problem. All you need to focus on is how to embrace your difference. How can you make this situation benefit you?

Alison is a single parent of14 year old Adam, both live with various diagnosed and pending diagnosis health disorders including Fibromyalgia and Elhers Danos; Alison is also Autistic and symptoms suggest Adam is as well.
